Ingredients
- Crumble Base & Topping: 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour, 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed, 1 large egg
- Apple Filling: 4 medium apples (about 600 g), peeled, cored, and diced, 2 tbsp (25 g) granulated sugar, 2 tbsp (25 g) brown sugar, 1 tbsp (8 g) all-purpose flour, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, 2 tsp lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x9-inch (23x23 cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- Mix Crumble:
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Egg:
- Add the egg and mix until just combined the mixture will be crumbly.
- Form Base:
- Press about two-thirds of the crumble mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the base.
- Prepare Filling:
- In a separate bowl, toss diced apples with both sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until well coated.
- Assemble:
- Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crumble base. Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture over the apples to cover.
- Bake:
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
- Cool and Serve:
- Allow to cool completely in the pan before using the parchment to lift out and slice into bars.
